MEDIATION AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION IN YOUTH SERVICE

School-based conflict resolution programs gain potency when linked with youth service organizations within the community. Taking their learning back into the community and family settings is often the biggest challenge youth face with conflict resolution training especially when others are not similarly trained. Mediation and conflict resolution in community youth service programs give youth a consistent message about resolving conflicts peacefully.

Instruction in conflict resolution processes provides youth with vital skills that help resolve disputes in the community, school and at home. This workshop will help create a more peaceful community through the development of an effective dispute resolution program where youth, parents and organization staff learn to communicate effectively, to view conflict as a means for growth, and to generate options to resolve disputes.

The workshop will explore:

• Peer Mediation- youth helping other youth resolve their dispute in a manner acceptable to all

• Negotiation- youth working together to resolve their dispute without a third party

• Group Problem Solving- youth working together as a group to resolve disputes affecting a large number of people

• Program Implementation- outlines the responsibilities of an implementation team which include selection and training of team members and youth

The interactive workshop allows parents, staff and youth to learn about conflict resolution processes through lecture, video presentations and group discussion. Participants will also have extensive practice in resolution techniques through simulations.

Participants will receive Mediation and Conflict Resolution in Youth Service and Community Organizations, a training manual developed by NCCRE.
